The Social Media Hamster Wheel. How to Step Off and Start Building True Assets

Blog

Do you ever feel like you’re running on a treadmill with no off switch? You post. You refresh. You wait. And… crickets.

Social media has become a double-edged sword for most of us. It’s where we have to be, but it’s also where our content goes to die. We pour hours into crafting the perfect post, only to watch it disappear into the void within minutes.

It’s exhausting, demoralising, and frankly, unsustainable.

But what if I told you there’s a better way? A way to stop chasing algorithms and start building something that grows over time?

Let me tell you how I broke free from the social media hamster wheel – and how you can too.

The Problem: Social Media is a Fleeting Moment

Here’s the truth: social media is a moment. Your post is like a drop of water on a hot stone – it’s here today, gone tomorrow.

You might get a few likes, maybe a comment or two. But the moment you stop posting, your visibility drops to zero.

This is what I call the hamster wheel effect. You’re running in circles, trying to stay visible, but the needle never moves.

The Solution: Discovery Assets

The way out? Stop treating social media as the main event. Instead, focus on building discovery assets.

What’s a discovery asset?

It’s a piece of content that grows in value over time. Think blogs, podcasts, and YouTube videos.

Here’s why they’re different:

  • They’re evergreen: Your blog post from last year can still bring in new readers today.
  • They’re searchable: Platforms like YouTube and Google actively deliver your content to people searching for it.
  • They compound: The more you create, the more your library grows – and the more people find you.

For me, my oldest podcast episodes and YouTube videos still bring in thousands of new listeners and viewers every month – even when I don’t post a thing.

The Strategy: Create for Discovery Assets First, Then Repurpose

Here’s the shift that changed everything for me:

  1. Start with a discovery asset: Write a blog, record a podcast, or film a YouTube video.
  2. Repurpose for social media: Take snippets, quotes, or visuals from your discovery asset and share them on social media.

Now, instead of creating content for social media, you’re using social media to amplify your discovery assets.

This is a game-changer. Why?

  • You’re creating something with lasting value.
  • You’re not dependent on algorithms.
  • You’re building a sustainable system that works for you, not against you.

The Results: A Sustainable, Ever-Growing Library of Content

Since I made this shift, I’ve seen incredible results.

My oldest podcast episodes and YouTube videos continue to perform well, bringing in new listeners and viewers every month.

But more importantly, I’ve stepped off the social media treadmill.

I’m no longer running in circles, trying to stay visible. Instead, I’m building a library of content that works for me – not the other way around.

Your Next Step: Start Building Your Discovery Assets

Ready to break free from the social media hamster wheel? Here’s how to get started:

  1. Choose Your Platform: Pick a discovery asset that suits your strengths – a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel.
  2. Focus on Quality: Create content that’s valuable, evergreen, and searchable.
  3. Repurpose for Social: Share snippets, quotes, or visuals from your discovery asset on social media.

It’s time to stop consuming your effort and start compounding it.

Question for You: What’s your favourite discovery asset? Blogs? Podcasts? YouTube? Let me know in the comments – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
